ART NARRATIVES
2022 · Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv
Art Narratives was a large-scale exhibition of works by faculty members of the Lviv National Academy of Arts, presented at the Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv. The project was curated by Orest Holubets, Professor, Doctor of Art History, and member of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine.
I have always found exhibitions of this kind especially compelling. They bring together many artists in one space: people of different generations, experiences, outlooks, styles, and understandings of art. They work within the same academic environment, yet each develops a distinct artistic language.
This diversity was central to Art Narratives. The exhibition brought together different ways of engaging with tradition and the present, from new forms of realism and expressive painting to conceptual practices and abstraction. Contemporary works were shown alongside those of prominent artist-educators from previous decades, creating a dialogue between generations.
For me, the project was also an opportunity to see the Academy from a certain distance: not only as the institution where I work, but as a place where many individual artistic narratives coexist. Their different positions do not weaken its unity; they are what give it shape.
I had a similar experience in 2016, when the Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv hosted an exhibition marking the 70th anniversary of the Lviv National Academy of Arts. What interests me most about projects on this scale is the chance to see how dozens of individual practices, generations, and artistic directions can come together in one exhibition space, each retaining its distinct character while contributing to a shared image of the art school.
