INTERNATIONAL BIENNALE OF MINIATURE ART

2012–2016 · Poland — Germany — Belgium
International travelling exhibition

My involvement with the International Biennale of Miniature Art began in Częstochowa in 2012. The project offered me a very different experience of working with format and scale.

A miniature demands particular concentration. In a small format, I cannot develop pictorial space as I would on a large canvas. I have to retain what is essential: a sign, a rhythm, the relationship between colour and form, the first impulse of a composition.

That is why I see these works as occupying a space between a sketch and a finished piece. Each is a kind of record of an idea: a moment when it has taken visual form but remains open to further development. Some compositions may remain independent miniatures; others may later find their way into larger works.

The Biennale was also distinctive for the scope of its international dialogue. Among works by many artists, each small piece stood as a concentrated expression in its own right. After the main exhibition, a selection of works travelled to other venues, allowing the same piece to enter new contexts and meet new audiences. Documented itineraries of individual editions included cities across Poland, as well as venues in Germany and Belgium.

My works were included in the Biennale catalogues and travelled with the international collection to these subsequent presentations. For me, there is something remarkable in that: a physically small work can have a much wider geographical life.

This is one of the qualities of the miniature that interests me most. Its physical size does not determine the scale of the idea it contains. On the contrary, the limits of the format compel me to concentrate an idea into an almost elemental sign.

For me, a miniature is a record of an idea: a space between the first impulse of a sketch and the possibility of developing it on a larger scale.
