First Frosts captures a fleeting moment of transition from autumn to winter — a time when the cold has already touched the earth but has not yet taken hold of the entire landscape.
The foreground is covered with a delicate layer of frost. Cool blue and grey-green tones of the earth contrast with the warm golden light of the distant field. Between these two spaces stand bare trees, their slender branches tracing an intricate network of lines against the clear sky, as though preserving the last traces of autumn's movement.
What gives the landscape its particular atmosphere is this encounter between cold and light. Winter is already present in the earth, the frost, and the bare branches, while the sunlit space beyond the trees still retains the warmth of the preceding season. For a brief moment, the two seasons seem to exist side by side.
First Frosts is an observation of the moment when the first cold arrives, when nature has not yet fallen asleep, but its movement is gradually slowing down. The change of season takes place almost without an event — through the colour of the earth, the clarity of the air, the bare trees, and the light that still holds the memory of warmth.
