Last Rays is a landscape centred on a fleeting moment when the sun, just before disappearing beyond the horizon, penetrates the dense woodland and briefly transforms it.

The dark forest opens up in flashes of warm golden light. It passes between the tree trunks, touches the ground and fragments of vegetation, drawing them out of deep blue, violet, and green shadows. Here, light does not merely illuminate the landscape — it becomes the central event of the painting.

Fragmented, energetic brushstrokes dissolve the clarity of forms. Tree trunks, foliage, earth, and shadows are composed of individual touches of colour that merge into a unified space when viewed from a distance. The recognisable landscape remains, yet gradually transforms into an interplay of warm and cool masses of colour.

What becomes particularly significant is the fleeting nature of the moment itself. Within a few minutes, the warm patches of light will disappear, and the forest will sink into shadow. For this reason, light acquires an almost tangible presence — a brief manifestation that painting attempts to preserve.

Last Rays captures the impression of a moment just before the disappearance of light, when an ordinary woodland landscape briefly acquires extraordinary intensity, and colour becomes a means of preserving what nature is about to transform.
